Language, Nonverbal, and Listening Skills

T.V. Episode:
The program I choose to watch is Eve. The show was based on a fashion designer and her friends succeeding in life. As I watch show on mute I observed Shelly non verbal skills. Such as eye contact and constantly moving hands. To understand what was going on was a little difficult. In one scene it look her and J.T was fussing about some situation. After tuning to the volume, I understand what was going on. They in a disagreement about some minor issues in their relationship. I understood now, why Shelly was throwing up her hands and look like they wanted to punch him the face. My assumptions to t.v show were on point. I can often read into people expressions. People often called me "nosy". But I believe I just have a curious mind. This assignment was very reliable to me and others to experience the world without sound.

  1. Hi Tameka,
It's true that communication is not always straightforward and that your assumptions might have been more correct had you watched a show you knew well. This brings to mind how valuable relationships are in communication. The better we know each other, the deeper understanding we have of each other's communication styles and skills.
Also, as I watched Desperate Housewives on mute this week, I found it to be a very interesting experience. What surprised me was how much nonverbal communication and facial expressions popped out at me when there was no sound, yet how much the nonverbal cues became much more subconscious when the sound came back on. It goes to show which of our senses are more dominant, and which senses we can become more aware of as we continue to develop as more effective communicators.
