There is one thing I have developed over the past five years and that is a sharp knowledge of the shortage of the traditional education. Living in the 21st century, an era in which many young adults are not as interested in education. I feel that it is important to incorporate many views and theories not only into our education, but also into our public school system as well. Through my graduate studies, I plan to develop my ability to look and examine many ways to reach out to many young adults.
This formulation of my goals did not come about easily. During my first few years of undergraduate study, I had a lot of difficulty finding my "position" in the education field. I often felt as if I were simply studying the criticism of others without really developing my own voice and opinions. I made conscious efforts to identify my own latent assumptions, and I constantly monitored my thoughts to ensure that they were not the simple regurgitation of others' opinions.
After a semester of internship, I saw myself through the revealing lens of a true educator, and I began to challenge the assumptions in which I was drenched. In November of 2009, I publicly challenged homophobia in my classroom by presenting a wonderful lesson for my instructor. In the midst of such self-actualization, I had an intellectual epiphany that helped me identify my ability to further my education. I have gain more confidence in trying new and excited things. Being a member of the online community will be a great opportunity for me.
